Release Management & Strategic Planning
🔥Week’s Question🔥
How do I ideate product features for next 3 months? What should I keep in mind while planning the roadmap? How to exercise strategic decision making at this stage?
Answered by: Areesha
Today’s Q&A is based on the product roadmap project that we released last month and we saw how you all did.
Quick Update ⚡
Don’t worry about those who didn’t receive their certificates, will get them soon.
Your projects are still under evaluation 🙂.
So, the reason why am writing on this question today is that we found out that most of you find it difficult to ideate product features for a product.
Although I’ve already written a detailed article on Ideation & Brainstorming tips, I saw that most of you are good at brainstorming unique features for a product but are unable to decide what goes ahead in the initial release.
That’s when you apply strategic decision-making as a product manager while planning out your roadmaps.
Implementing Strategic Decision-Making for Initial Product Releases 💡
Here are important things to keep in mind while implementing a practical roadmap.
Define Success and Goals Prior
“Clarity” is the most essential skill for any PM. Before you start to think about “what” features you need to build, the crucial question is defining the “why”. We cannot build features just because they sound fancy or are unique from other competitor applications.
The ultimate goal is to focus on what customer problems a feature solves and what value it brings to the table.
Consider Development Efforts
This is the most important point that PMs should consider while planning out features for real products. Because this is completely inevitable.
A fair understanding of how different types of features are developed and implemented by engineering teams makes you a visionary PM.
This is simple.
Once you’ve ideated a few features, pick one of them, maybe the main/dominant feature.
Spend 5 minutes thinking about what elements or sub-features would be required to implement this feature. Just think about a rough idea.
Release Strategy and Planning
Gradual Rollout: Consider a staged rollout to gather real-world data and user feedback before wider distribution. We don’t have to build everything at once! Plan for a phased rollout, releasing high-impact features first and gathering feedback before further development.
Marketing and User Acquisition Plan: Develop a strategy to reach your target audience and generate interest for your app launch.
Remember Your Product Vision, always
Long-term Vision: While focusing on the next quarter, ensure your roadmap aligns with your long-term product vision. Consider the future implications of each feature and its potential for future expansion.
Focus on Value: Every feature should demonstrably add value to the user or your business goals. Don't be afraid to say no to features that don't align with your strategic priorities.
Remember, strategic decision-making is an ongoing process. Continuously gather data, analyze feedback, and adapt your product to meet user needs and market demands.
